Frank’s Sport Shop is a Hunting License authorized issuing agent for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which means that you can purchase your hunting licenses in our store located at 430 E. Tremont Ave. Bronx, NY 10457 (click on the address to get directions on Google Maps). Please contact our store for license service hours since our authorized agent is not always available. License Requirements & Safety Education
Hunter Safety Education Requirements:
All first-time hunters must pass one or more courses before they can get a hunting license in New York. Visit the NYS Hunter Education page to learn more and find a free course near you.
In New York State you need a hunting license if you are:
- 12 years and older, and using a firearm or bow to hunt or take wild game. Persons under age 12 cannot hunt. Please review regulations and information for Junior Hunters (ages 12-15) here.
Additional Privileges/Permits: depending on the season and species you are hunting you may need additional privileges or permits. These are listed below.
You DON’T need a hunting license if you are:
- A resident landowner primarily engaged in farming (including lessees and members of their immediate families) when small game hunting on farm lands they are occupying and cultivating.
- A Native American living and hunting on reservation land.
- Hunting on a licensed shooting preserve or big game shooting facility.
Note: To hunt turkey, all hunters must purchase a turkey permit. There are no exceptions.
New York Resident Qualification
To qualify for a New York State hunting License, you must have permanent residency in New York State for more than 30 days. Residency is a place where you maintain a fixed, permanent home, and to which you always intend to return.
You will need one of the following documents as proof of residency when purchasing your fishing license:
- NYS driver license from DMV showing a valid NYS address.
- NYS non-driver identification from DMV showing a valid NYS address.
- Current NYS vehicle registration showing a valid NYS address.
- IT-201 OR W-2 income tax form from the previous year.
- Current voter registration card.
- Current student ID card from a New York State College or University.
- Military Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) OR military orders.
- Current pay stub OR note on letterhead from a current employer. Either must verify your legal NYS address.

You may qualify for a free/reduced fee annual hunting license if you are:
- Active duty military. More Info.
- Military veteran with 40% or greater disability. More Info.
- Junior hunter (12-15 years). More Info.
- Senior citizen (70 years or older). More Info.
- Native American member (select tribes). More Info.
- Non-resident student attending a New York State college or university full-time. More Info.
Lifetime License:
Hunt for life with a lifetime license! Available to New York residents only. See costs below.
General Hunting Licenses Cost
With this license you can hunt big game and small game. Small game and big game hunting is now included in the annual hunting license for both
residents and nonresidents.
Note 1: This license is required before other privileges (i.e. bowhunting, muzzleloading & turkey permit) can be purchased.
Note 2: It is not necessary to purchase a separate bear tag when buying a hunting license.
For New York Residents:
- Lifetime Hunting License (all ages): $535
- Annual Hunting License (ages 16-69): $22/year
- Annual Hunting License (ages 70+): $5/year
- Annual Hunting License (ages 12-15): $5/year
For Non-residents in New York:
- Annual Hunting License (ages 16+): $100/year
- Annual Hunting License (ages 12-15): $5/year

Needed for harvesting antlerless deer (antlers less than 3″ long) in select Wildlife Management Units.

- Ages 12-15: No Fee
- Holders of lifetime sportsman licenses purchased prior to October 1, 2009: No Fee
Permits for Hunters with Disability (More Info):
Needed for hunters using specialized equipment to aid in discharging a bow, or to discharge a firearm from a motorized vehicle.
